7 tips for minimising dust and mould at home

Ways to minimise exposure to pollutants in our home, from heavy metals to toxins and fungal contamination and VOCs

1/ Lead

Consider buying paint with low VOCs and lead free, this applies to toys, crockery, painted chairs and tables. Invest in a carbon HEPA filter and turbo vacuum. Take shoes off at the door so you don’t walk in the outdoor stuff into your house. Use a filter when drinking water, as it can contain low levels of lead and other metals.

2/ Mercury

Switch to eating smaller fish which have lower mercury levels. Old dental fillings could also contain mercury.

3/ Aluminium

Is a neurotoxin so stay away from deodorants which contain aluminium.

4/ Wood flooring

Much better than carpets and look for natural finish options over high VOC varnishes

5/ Clean and Dust

Clean and dust your house regularly, if allergic to dust always wear a dust mask. Dust with a damp bamboo microfibre cloth. Add one cup of water, 1/ 3 cup of vinegar, 1 tablespoon of olive oil and a few drops of your preferred essential oil. This will stop the dust from being displaced. Use hot water when washing bed linens weekly. Get some indoor plants to help purify the air.

6/ Mould

Is a health risk, can effect our nervous and respiratory systems. Work out where the damp is coming from, see if you have a leak and work out where the source of the mould is coming from. Walls, pipes, building structure will need to be check by a professional to help you diagnose where the damp issues are coming from. Cross ventilating your home home where possible. Get fresh air circulating is great to minimise mould.
